Enki is often depicted as residing in this Abzu or "water palace." A
cylinder seal of about 2000 BC shows it as his home surrounded by
water. It was probably a sealed mobile craft as well, as indicated
in the "Gilgamesh Epic" where Utnapishtim, the Babylonian Noah, is
told to seal his ark thoroughly in order to make it waterproof.
Before Enki built the first city of Eridu, he
resided in the Abzu which apparently had descended from the orbiting
space ship to settle in the swamps of Mesopotamia. Presumably, it
was of such a configuration that it could fly and was submersible
as well. In this respect, there is an interesting comparison to the
configuration of the Ark of Noah.
ENKI AS THE OANNES OF THE BABYLONIAN LEGENDS
Eridu was thought to have been created by the gods and was home to the great god Enki (also known as Ea) who would develop from a local god of fresh water into the god of wisdom and magic (among other attributes) and stand with other deities such as Anu, Enlil, and Inanna as the most important in the Mesopotamian Pantheon. The Sumerian King List cites Eridu as the “city of the first kings”, stating, “After the kingship descended from heaven, the kingship was in Eridu” and the city was looked back upon by the variouis tribes and city-states of Mesopotamia as a metropolis of a 'golden age’ in the same way the writers of the biblical narratives created a 'Garden of Eden’ (most probably on the model of Eridu) as their mythical paradise from which humanity fell.
Eridu appears to be the earliest settlement in the region, founded c. 5400 BC according to archeologists, close to the Persian Gulf near the mouth of the Euphrates River. Because of accumulation of silt at the shoreline over the millennia, the remains of Eridu are now some distance from the gulf at Abu Shahrain in Iraq. Excavation has shown that the city was founded on a virgin sand-dune site with no previous occupation. P. Steinkeller has hypothesised that the earliest divinity at Eridu was a Goddess, who later emerged as the Earth Goddess Ninhursag (Nin = Lady, Hur = Mountain, Sag = Sacred), with the later growth in Enki as a male divinity the result of a hieros gamos, with a male divinity of the temple.

Eridu
Adapa
lived at Eridu when his god Ea warned him "do not eat the bread of
death or you will die," presaging God's warning to Adam about not eating
the forbiddden fruit. Unlike Adam, Adapa obeys and thereby loses out on
a chance to obtain immortality for himself and mankind. His god, Ea
(Sumerian: Enki), had lied to him, he was willing to allow man (Adapa)
to possess "godly forbidden knowledge" (which outraged the supreme god
Anu) but denied him immortality. Unlike Yahweh, Anu decides if this man
has godly-forbidden knowledge I might as well make him a god by giving
him immortality so he summons the forbidden food, Ea's "bread of death"
for Adapa to eat. In other words, the Mesopotamians understood man lost
on a chance to obtain immortality not because he had forbidden
knowledge, but because his god (Ea) tricked him into believing it was
the "bread of death" when, in reality, it was the "bread of life" and he
would die if he ate it.
